We drive south to Nebraska: Johnson Lake Campground, Elwood

We had a history lesson as we listened to the audiobook of LET THE PEOPLE ELECT THE PRESIDENT, about the Electoral College, as we drove 4+ hours to our campground. There was so much that happened that I’ve never heard of when the Founding Fathers got together to put together our government. I’m more of a historian now that I’m old enough to have been a witness to some 66+ years of history, and this is a good fit to help me learn more.

The other thing: Dan loves to stop at Presidential sites. If I’m being honest, I love some more than others. (I wasn’t that upset that the Hoover site was still closed due to COVID, for example).

After we filled up with fresh water and got our camp set up, we lounged around and took it easy. We rode the 11 miles on the bike path around Johnson Lake. We were bordered by new cornstalks coming up, the lake, the canal, three Free Lending Libraries (one near our campground made from a row boat, with a door on it with glass windows—have to get a photo to show my friend Paula!) Several gazebos along the path that wound through woods and along streets. There were two campgrounds and lots of homes right on the water and closely spaced, most with boat docks. I took my first photo of the day when I saw the bank swallows—with their distinctive holes in the side of the muddy embankment. They were hunting the insects that hadn’t run into us on our ride!

Bank swallows and their nests: you can’t see in this photo, but they were flying all around me

  1. As I read these entries in your blog, I am on my screen porch in the breeze, hearing the wind blow through my pines, and listening to my Boothbay Harbor bell. I can imagine I'm just about as cozy in my spot as you look to be in yours. Your spot under your canopy looks wonderful!

  4. Poor Herbie Hoover — I’m sure his slumbering soul is grateful for the fiascos of 45, boosting HH’s historical streetcred a bit, from catacombs to subbasement perhaps! Johnson Lake and environs look so beautiful. Keep on keepin’ on!🏕🚲
