Arizona: Holbrook

 13 May 2022

Lots of today’s sites were places I got to visit with Andrew in 2014 but worth the time to revisit—and they were new for Dan. The drive itself was filled with mountain vistas, rocks, desert, and when approaching Flagstaff, lots of Jeffrey and Lodgepole pines. They were much greener in ‘14; today many were drying out and looked like stands of tinder…

Meteor Crater

Five miles off I-40 is Meteor Crater. Worth the drive. Nice visitor center, introductory movie, and small museum. Worth it for us to take the time for the visit.

The picture window where you can, to a limited degree, control the vista in the picture.

The scenery driving out of Laughlin to Holbrook was endlessly entertaining.

The local geode store has dinosaurs out front. You can’t miss it!

Wigwam Motel

The Wigwam Motel is classic Route 66. Fun and funky.

I got talking with a nice dreadlocked couple from Utah. They were staying in this teepee and offered to let me take a photo of the inside. It was so much fun chatting with them because they (well, especially the wife!) were so excited to be able to stay there—for them it was a bucket list item. It looked clean and comfortable. At least five of them were occupied when we were there.

Tomorrow: we head over to the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. Stay Tuned!
