California: Sunshine, Flowers, Friends, Animals at the San Diego Zoo

 4 May 2022

With a sprinkling of folks in Star Wars gear and tee-shirts for Star Wars Day, Dan and I rode the Discovery Tram around for an hour, then met with Lori and her twins (Asher and Ronald, with whom I share a September 18 birthday!) for fun watching the animals at the San Diego Zoo. Lots and lots of photos. Memories were made.

San Diego Zoo Animals

Asher wanted to go to the Reptile House and since that was the last thing we did, and since the animals were posing so cooperatively, I have a lot of photos of snakes and lizard-ish things. Their scaly patterns were so gorgeous! I also liked seeing the flamingos, cats, and well, most everything. Again, for my fourth visit in a row, I was unable to locate a live wombat at this zoo….something about them being nocturnal and they hide out in their enclosures….we DID find their enclosure…it’s like a horrid joke this Zoo is playing on me!

I call this guy Handlebar Mustache Monkey…or,

Whitenose

Can you see the eyes (one partially hidden) and little nose of this “sweet” Tasmanian Devil?

The Andean, or as UC Berkeley Optometrists prefer to call them, SPECTACLED BEAR performed by picking up a bundle of fronds and then proceeded to climb up this tree and stand up at the top!

Polar Bears, face to face

A little lettuce salad for lunch

Koala Bear: sleeping

Koala Bear: (almost) awake

Komodo Dragon (I was surprised at the colors—this was the first one I’d ever seen!)

This is NOT a black and white photo—it’s full color

This guy was way up on the side of his display box, with only his hand sticking out. I think it looks like a really ornate glove!

Plants at the Zoo and Beyond

Seen on the street in San Diego after we left the Zoo

I noticed this while Dan was checking in at our RV Park. They’re really pretty!

This jade plant hedge is also at our RV Park—so healthy!

But wait! There’s MORE…

Border wall seen along I-8 (taken from a moving truck)

The mountains we drove through as we eased in to San Diego were covered with enormous boulders and various rock formations.

Growing up, THIS is pretty much what I thought a desert looked like. This is the first desert I’ve ever seen that is all dunes and blown sand. Mostly they have plants growing in the sandy soil.

Seen while driving from Casa Grande, Arizona to Lakeside (San Diego), California. I’ve become obsessed now with the saguaros.

Barrio Star Blackberry Jalapeño Margaritas capped off our day

We ordered take-out from Extraordinary Desserts, now moved to a more spacious storefront since the last time we visited.

Tomorrow: we have a Padres game on tap for the evening and hope to explore some more of San Diego during the day!

  1. Love, love, LOVE your animal and plant and desert (even The Wall) and Blackberry Jalapeño Margarita pics! (I'm so glad to find your blog again -- for several days I couldn't find it on-line and felt so disconnected from you.) Hope you enjoyed the Padres game -- you know how much I do [not] wish I could have shared THAT with you!!!
