New Mexico: On the Road to Santa Fe

 15 May 2022

The Drive to La Ventana Arch at El Malpais National Monument

Janet suggested we might like this drive to La Ventana Arch as we made our way from Holbrook to Santa Fe; she wasn’t wrong. The arch itself is not that obvious from the parking lot but a short hike later, you can see that it really IS an arch as you can now see the light penetrating from the top. Love the striations of color too.

The rest of the photos in  this group show some of the sights we were treated to as we drove to the arch. Enjoy.

And, Some Bonus Photos from on the Road

Note the train on the right side of the photo. The longest trains I’ve ever seen are seen from Rt 40 in Arizona and New Mexico. I remember noticing that in ‘14 when Andrew and I took this route too.

Volcanic lava rock near the side of the road…we saw lots of lava columns on the tops of mesas too (like what we saw coming out of the Columbia River Valley last summer).

I just loved the colors and pattern on this rock.

Shot through a dirty front windshield, we’ve been approaching and watching the Santa Fe fires. We had planned on going to Bandelier National Monument and Los Alamos, but Bandelier is closed due to fire danger. If you travel in “summer”, then this is the new normal.

Tomorrow we meet up with our friend Janet and traipse around with her….stay tuned!
